Dear friends of CSC,
I’m writing to ask you to become a member of The Center for Sex and Culture. Please take a moment to read this and learn a little about why your membership is important to CSC and also the benefits it will bring you. I’ve been lucky enough to meet many of you, but we likely haven’t had this conversation.
You may or may not know that memberships and small donations from individuals are the primary source of funding for CSC. You also may or may not know that all of the CSC staff is volunteer. Nobody is paid to do this. It is a labor of love. It is also sometimes a challenge that tries the best of us. Good things are worth fighting for.
Just like public television, your membership helps us stay afloat in these trying times. There is no major backup source of financial support. Our frankly sexual mission closes off many avenues of fundraising.
The past year has been a time of exciting change for CSC. We have moved the library forward and are getting close to where we want it to be. We have open library hours from noon to five on Sundays (except when another event occupies the same time slot). The Gallery is going strong with a new show opening on the first Friday of every month and is building a strong reputation for first class work. I’m very proud of the new space and amazed by all the work that so many have put in to it.
The library will be starting a lending program, later this year, and membership at the library level and above will entitle you to borrow books form the CSC library. This is the only publicly available sexuality library of its kind. This also brings me to another benefit of membership: the library sale.
On April 28th we are having our big library sale of unwanted/duplicate/random material. There are treasures beyond imagination ready to be had for cheap. Library members will be invited to a special preview of sale materials the night before the sale and also allowed first admittance to the sale. That alone is worth the price of membership.
Members also are invited to occasional special events not open to the general public. We are striving this year to increase the value of your membership as much as we can. Keep tuned for more member perks as we plan them.
I give of my time and my money to CSC because I believe that allowing people to shake free of our society’s sexual repression and ignorance is a good in itself as well as a point of entry that allows many to live a more deeply examined and fulfilling life. I believe that a sheltering safe space for sexual outsiders and explorers of all stripes is a crucial part of the world I want to live in. I invite you to join me in these efforts by becoming a CSC member at whatever level you are able.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
All my best,
Archivist and Gallerist
