Stefano Laforgia: Japanese Rope Bondage Aesthetics

Friday May 9, 2014 from 6 pm to 8 pm
At the Center for Sex and Culture
$15 per person
Tickets here

Why do the Japanese tie the way that they tie? What is it that they really find appealing in shibari? This illustrated lecture explores differences and similarities in visual style between western and Japanese rope bondage.

About Stefano

Stefano Laforgia is an Italian Rigger and BDSM educator. He started his journey in BDSM at early age, but lived it mainly in private until he moved in Rome in 2000, where he became an active member of the local BDSM community.
In 2005 he quit his office job and decided to live his lifestyle in a public way when he founded Alcova, the first fetish/BDSM shop in Rome. Since then he has worked on various projects, both in Italy and around the world: he was the first to organize bondage classes in Rome, organized play parties and took part in BDSM themed workshops and conferences. In 2011 Stefano founded the first School of Japanese Bondage in Italy, and organized “LegARTI”, the first event in Italy entirely dedicated to Japanese bondage.
His approach to shibari has shifted with time especially since 2008, when he started visiting Japan and met some of the best Japanese kinbakushi, making acquaintances with some of them, including Kinoko Hajime, who Stefano invited to come and perform in Europe for the first time.
Stefano was so fascinated with Japanese bondage that he started to share his views about it with other Italian and international riggers during various events in the following years, contributing to the genesis of a new trend that emphasizes the connection and interaction between the rigger and the bottom. This process clearly shows in the type of ties he uses and through his pictures, where Stefano becomes more and more an active part of the image, a whole with the model, showing the connection, the erotic tension, and the power exchange with the bottom.

Tying fast and tying neat. This workshop focuses on exercising and improving muscle memory in order to achieve better results in the quality and speed of your ties. No matter your level of experience, streamlining the way you move the rope will make a palpable difference to your bottoms; good rope handling is one of the essential tools for making the tying process feel like hot foreplay.
What to bring: 4x 7-8m (23-26ft) 5-7mm natural fiber ropes

Learn the foundation and secret of truly hot rope bondage play through this ingenious and unusual class.

What it looks like :

Couples touching, sighing, connecting, laughing, tossing each other around passionately and having a great time. Like yoga meets assisted stretching, meets contact improvisational movement, meets Tango with a touch of Fight Club!

What it really is:

Making your rope play hotter, sexier and more intense. The absolute foundation of amazing rope bondage play. Learn to seduce, connect, move, power-exchange, become present and play at a deeper level using the rope to transform your play.

This is part of the foundation skills for creating truly sexy and evocative rope scenes. A hands-on class using rope in a entirely new way… If you think rope play is just about tying knots, you’re missing the core of the seduction and connection. You will also learn stretching techniques to help you and your partner better achieve head-space, be mindful, eliminate distractions, reduce injuries and solid ergonomics of effective body handling.

Many of the skills learned will help both the top and bottom prepare for play, last longer in play, reduce potential of injuries, move effortlessly and explore sweet head space.

This method is rooted in the Rope Dojo philosophy - and thus will be presented in a rather uncommon way. Trust the method. It works! A bit of the “wax on, wax off” if you will…

No rope experience necessary, however if you have rope experience this will boost your current skill.

Adjustable to all fitness and mobility levels.

Pair and solos welcome. Pair attendance encouraged, but if you come solo, you’ll exercise and drill with other solo attendees.

This Rope Dojo Elective is open to those who play at one or both ends of the rope.

Midori is sharing videos she acquired from the venerable and much missed People’s Video in Japan Town of San Francisco. For decades, long before the internet, this little place was the secret treasure trove of rare Japanese movies, from cinephile classics, anime that never made it out of Japan, and of unusual, niche, and fetish adult videos never sourced in the US. You had to really know Japan town to locate the simple door and trudge up the stairs. There you met the owner, a quiet Japanese man, who is a true movie lover. The front room had all the kid’s movies, sward flicks and melodramas. He had a back-room where all the fetish and porn videos. First he had VHS and then DVDs. He had unlocked every film from the Japanese format so that we could watch it here in our US format machines. For so many years, this was the only reliable source of Japanese bondage imagery and resource for so many of us!
Sadly he closed the doors last year. The change in video rental really crushed his business. It seemed to break his heart in so many ways. When Midori last chatted with him, he was packing up to store to return to Japan to take care of his ailing mother. His clientele in the JAV (Japanese Adult Video) and his own tastes were mostly hetero sexual. This particular collection that Midori acquired reflects this.
Midori is a San Francisco based sexuality educator and founder of Rope Bondage Dojo® and ForteFemme Women’s Dominance Weekend Intensive. She wrote the first English language book on shibari with “Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage”.   Find her classes and events at: www.fhp-inc.com
