School of Shimmy Presents: **Fan Dancing with Balla Fire**

March 10, 7-9pm

Balla Fire has been seen flittering about stages all over the Bay Area and will teach you how to conceal and reveal with your fans. Various techniques and movements will be discussed. Learn to let the fans do the work as you move about, behind, and beneath them. BYO fans if you have them, any fans will do, as will a couple of mead notebooks, trash can lids, large serving platters, or anything your imagination can conjure. Fixed open ostrich feather fans and veiled fans will be used for demonstration, or Balla may snag your trash can lids to share tips and tricks. Small folding fans will also be provided to students. Fan (or trash can lid) dancing doesn’t have to be intimidating. Come dance and giggle with us for the evening. 
 
About this teacher: Miss Balla Fire, cofounder of Sin Sisters Burlesque in Santa Cruz, has left a swath of creative destruction on the burlesque landscape since 2005, a natural progression from the trail of broken hearts and stolen souls from her more vernal and carefree days. Once she began performing, this ingrained pattern of aggressive invasion gave her the social grace to rapidly become one of the premier creative leads in the Bay Area’s rich burlesque scene. Featuring regularly as one of the brightest stars in all Bay Area shows. In her hometown of Santa Cruz, the Sin Sisters reign supreme with one of the biggest and most elegant monthly burlesque shows in the country, on the second Saturday of each month. School of Shimmy presents: The Burlesque Body: It’s not what you think!

Dottie Lux is a 10 year burlesque performer (NYC and SF), producer of SF’s only twice weekly burlesque show, Red Hots Burlesque, and founder of School of Shimmy. This is the SF debut of this new 2 hour workshop designed to give you permission to get to know your body and how to show it off in the best light. This class is a great addition to any performers’ wealth of knowledge or for anyone who wants to get a better sense of their body. The desire to be challenged and have a great evening is a must. Learn to stand on your own two feet and be sure in that stance. As solo performers we must command the stage with only our bodies while everyday life can challenge the idea of a woman claiming space! Get the Burlesque Body you are looking for and be amazed when you find your mind is the most powerful muscle you can work out. This class will include confidence building exercises and a discussion on everyday harm reduction as well as creating a strong silhouette. Find your power pose and bring it with you everywhere!

In this two-hour workshop, students will learn the history of burlesque, how to create a persona and basic choreography. As well as learning to build yourburlesque attitude; feel great about your body, and an open discussion about increased confidence and positive thinking.

Backstage and The Business of Burlesque

Tuesday, October 16th from 7-9pm

Get booked! Get Press! Let producers know who you are and learn how to utilize all social media tools as well as writing the press releases that will get you noticed. This class is taught by two of the bay area’s most popular burlesque producers, DOTTIE LUX and JUICY D LIGHT so you can be sure you are getting the inside scoop. With your new tips and tools you will appear not only gracious, but also professional. The things you will learn in this class will make performing such a more pleasant experience for yourself, the stage manager, stage kitten and producer. Following these guidelines will help ensure you being asked back by producers and recommended by your peers. Please bring a notebook and any questions you may have on this topic. 

About this teacher: Ms. Juicy D. Light has been been back stage of many clubs, bars, and theaters over her 30 years of experience. Staring her career as a stage manager and director, she earned her Actor’s Equity Card. Over her 15 years as a professional, union stage manager she worked for major houses including the Lorraine Hansberry Theater, Asian American Theater Company and San Francisco’s Free Shakespeare in the Park. In 2007 she founded Rubenesque Burlesque, a respected burlesque troupe, and has been known to perform as a solo artist particularly in New York, Seattle and San Francisco. As producer she runs First Friday Follies, a successful monthly in Oakland and has created Salacious Underground: a neo burlesque experience. Juicy D. Light earned her B.A from San Francisco State University in Theater Arts.

Description:Fans, hats, pasties, shimmy belts, flowers for your hair and more! Make your performance pop and figure out how to do it yourself. Some supplies available day of class and a list of supplies to bring will be provided at registration.
