We are very proud to have two of the Bay Area’s finest local independent publisher, Manic D Press and Last Gasp,  joining us at Bookish Beasts this Sunday, July 13th, from Noon-6.

Manic D Press was founded by Jennifer Joseph in 1984. An award-winning literary press based in San Francisco, California publishing fiction, poetry, pop culture, music, art, narrative-oriented comix, and alternative travel books, we represent a diverse group of unique writers and artists, with emphasis on those who have been shunned by the traditional publishing establishment for lacking commercial viability, regardless of their talent or future promise.

Last Gasp is one of the largest and oldest publishers and purveyors of underground books and comics in the world, celebrating its 41st year in business. Over the years we have published, and in some cases brought to light, some of the most respected and talented artists working today, including R. Crumb, Justin Green, Bill Griffith, Mark Ryden, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Frank Kozik, Todd Schorr, Winston Smith, Spain, Robert Williams, and countless others. Today, we publish 12-20 new titles per year, focusing on ‘lowbrow’ and ‘pop surrealist’ artists, as well as graphic novels and pop culture titles. We also distribute all sorts of weird ‘n’ wonderful subversive literature, graphic novels, tattoo, and art books, supplying them to bookstores and art galleries on six continents.

Women of the Underground: Art: Cultural Innovators Speak for Themselves, is published by Manic D Press.

The Fetish Coloring Book is published by Last Gasp

ZINES, COMICS & ART BY THE BAY AREAS BEST CREATORS OF TRANSGRESSIVE AND EROTIC MATERIAL!

BOOKISH BEASTS: Center for Sex and Culture is looking for  zine and comic book makers!

After the success and fun of last year’s fest, we are inspired to bring together and try to grow the audiences of local zine and comics artists who make sexy books. Center for Sex & Culture is a fantastic multi-use space that is perfect for gathering local artists whose works need to be celebrated for their blatant hotness.

Bookish Beasts is a one-day zine fest for the creators of art, books and comics featuring content on sexuality, gender and erotica. We aim to give artists the opportunity to peddle their wares, and connect with local readers who love and collect adult material.

The zine fest is one day. Sunday, July 13th from noon to 5 pm. This event is free to the public, but you must be over 18 to attend.

CSC provides judgment-free education, cultural events, a library/media archive, and other resources to audiences across the sexual and gender spectrum; and to research and disseminate factual information, framing and informing issues of public policy and public health. Please consider donating copies of your work to the library and helping spread the word about this great resource. All of CSC’s books are searchable through Goodreads and CSC’s zine database: http://www.sexandculture.org/lbry

Fred Noland draws from a deep well of inspiration ranging from
the Expressionists to Underground Comics. His illustrations have
appeared in the SF Weekly, LA WeeklyTennisBikeNickelodeon
Canoe and Kay
akIllinois TimesXboX MagazineTokyoPop
Santa Fe Reporter
and more. His sequential art has been featured
in the Cartoon Art Museum, and the Oakland Museum at the OAK
installation. He has also taken part in group shows at San Francisco’s
SOMARTS and Amaru Galleries and RPS in Oakland.

As a cartoonist, he has produced a series of increasingly innovative and
eccentric minis. His current project, Black Sheep, features his most
ambitious work yet. The six-part “Neighborhood of the Beast” explores
the darker side of suburbia. Other highlights include the Southern Gothic
Midnight Creep
and his self proclaimed “jam comic from hell” Mantequilla
del Pato
 (with the incomparable Trevor Alixopulos).

Check out his twitter too.

That’s right, you guessed it. Fred Noland will be at Bookish Beasts. Come show support for all these incredible local artists.
