At the Mark I Chester studio at 1229 Folsom St. in San Francisco Cost: This is a benefit -- please bring your checkbook. Donations are tax deductible.
Dr. Carol Queen and the Center for Sex and Culture will host a benefit on Friday, Oct. 15th, at the Mark I Chester studio at 1229 Folsom St. in San Francisco. The Center for Sex and Culture is Mark's fiscal sponsor to raise funds for a new book of his photography. Because CSC is a 501c3 non-profit, all donations for the evening are tax deductible.
Lasting from 7-11pm, this will be a homey, laid-back affair with readings and performances by San Francisco underground luminaries such as Dr. Carol Queen, Seth Eisen, and Tom Orr of Dirty Little Show Tunes fame, plus other surprise guests. "Doing Time on Folsom Street," a 30-year retrospective of Mark's fine art gay radical sex photographs, will be on display.
Mark's work is a dark explicit diary that not only reflects moments from Mark's life, but at the same time reflects the tremendous struggles and changes that our community has gone through in the last 30 years. From sexual excess to devastation and loss, through spiritual explorations to sexual healing and now back to sexual excess: Mark's work is socially progressive and artistically taboo, as well as politically provocative. "Mark's work is an incredibly important historical record for San Francisco's gay male and radical sex communities, and as such has great sexological significance," says Carol Queen. "It is also infused with heart and is deeply moving. Mark I Chester is one of San Francisco's cultural treasures and the Center for Sex & Culture is very proud to be able to assist him in raising funds toward his next project."
More information and galleries can be found at markichester.com.
